Inspiring Murals Bring Creativity and Hope
Aug 22, 2022
At Beck Center for the Arts, we believe in the power of creativity to transform lives. That’s why we’re proud to announce our inspiring partnership with the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court, which brought two vibrant, collaborative murals to life inside the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center.
This unique project was made possible thanks to the leadership of Judge Jennifer O’Malley, who helped connect Beck Center with juvenile residents eager to engage in something positive. Under the guidance of Beck Center Visual Arts Instructor Ryan Finley—a professional hand-drawn artist for Marvel and Star Wars who began his career as a tattoo artist—the young residents brainstormed, designed, and painted the murals over the course of several weeks.

Murals with Meaning
The murals represent far more than just paint on a wall. For four weeks, residents participated in on-site cartooning classes, learning to channel their energy into positive imagery. They drew from their favorite colors, musicians, sports teams, and Cleveland pride to design works that speak to their personal stories and shared community spirit.
One mural, painted in the Visitation Room, now serves as a colorful backdrop for family visits, graduation ceremonies, and the moment when residents take their first steps toward a new beginning upon release. The second mural, located in a curved hallway, embodies the theme “hard times don’t last,” a phrase suggested by one of the residents that resonated with the entire group.

Voices from the Project
For many participants, the project was more than just an art class—it was a chance to connect, collaborate, and express themselves.
Resident J.F. reflected:
“While painting and drawing, it brung out and made me feel different types of ways. While doing those activities it brung everyone together, made positive conversations, and gave laughter to everyone and made me feel free.”
Resident B.K. shared:
“The Art Program really helped me to focus on something positive. I enjoyed the small conversations that I and the helpers had because it was deeper than the art. It was a nice experience, and I would for sure do it again!”
Looking Ahead
The success of these murals has sparked excitement for future collaborations, including the possibility of ongoing cartooning classes and even the creation of a recording arts studio—a space where residents can use music as a form of expression and empowerment.
As Celeste Wainwright, Deputy Director of Programming for the Cuyahoga County Detention Center, shared, partnerships like this are vital for offering youth therapeutic, social-emotional, and educational opportunities that build self-esteem and encourage growth.
At Beck Center, we are honored to play a role in this creative journey, proving once again that the arts have the power to uplift, heal, and inspire—no matter where you are in life’s journey.
